Steve Varley has been at the helm of one of the Big Four accountants in Britain and the third globally since 2011. Yorkshire-born Varley is also a family man and fitness fanatic, taking part in triathlons and road races during his time off. Summed up in the tagline Real Leaders, Real Conversations, Steve talks openly to Heather Jackson about his ambitions both professionally and personally and is “open-palmed” about his family life.
 

Official Biography

Steve Varley has over 20 years of client/consulting experience in a variety of sectors including Government and Public Services, Pharmaceuticals and Oil & Gas and is presently responsible for a £1.6bn business and over 11,000 people. He has been closely involved in some of EY’s largest engagements including work with the UK Government and National Grid.
 
At the helm of EY in the UK since 2011, Yorkshire-born Varley, joined EY from Anderson Consulting in 2005 to lead its Advisory business.  He was invited to join the UK & Ireland Leadership Team in 2006 as Managing Partners Markets.
 
Steve has lived and worked around the world, spending significant time in the USA working in New York, Chicago and San Francisco.  He is also a member of the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa Executive Board for EY, providing him with a great perspective on both the mature western economies and some of the most exciting regions in the world including Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa and India.
 
Recognising that entrepreneurs drive the growth of the broader economy and play a major role in job creation and wealth, he is an active sponsor of EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year programme, the world’s most prestigious business awards.  He is also a supporter of Start-up Britain, the private sector’s response to the Government’s call for an enterprise-led recovery.
 
Steve believes strongly in the need for increased diversity and inclusiveness in business and is an active member of the 30% Club and the FTSE100 Cross Mentoring Programme for high potential women.
 
Passionate about corporate social responsibility, Steve is one of the founding members of the Social Business Trust, a partnership of six world-class businesses who have come together to combine their resources and expertise to help accelerate the growth of social enterprise in the UK.
