Authentic leaders talking openly about themselves and their journey so far
President & CEOAsda Stores Ltd.
Andy began his retailing career at the age of 17 while attending school, leaving with a “disappointing” set of exam results. During this time he became an avid competitor of water polo, cricket and rugby and recognising a positive relationship between sport and business, Andy has transferred the competitive spirit of his sporting days to heading one of the UK’s largest supermarket retailers.
His father, a village policeman, raised himself and his two younger brothers after their mother died and Andy credits his father, alongside his relatively poor school performance, as a huge incentive to carve a successful career in retailing; originally joining Asda in 1992.
Andy speaks out on mentoring and professional influencers; his belief that the most inspirational leaders of today are “born and not made” and the life-skills he now offers his own children.
Andy Clarke is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Asda Stores Ltd, one of the UK's largest supermarket retailers. Asda's mission is to be the UK's most trusted retailer and to achieve this, Andy is focussed on maintaining Asda’s price leadership; continuing to increase food quality across the chain; and pioneering the company’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people.
Andy’s career with Asda spans almost 20 years, having originally joined the company from Morrisons in 1992 as Manager of the Edinburgh store before rising to the position of Retail Director. In 2000, he left to become Chief Operating Officer for Matalan, a position he held for two years before being appointed as Managing Director of Iceland.
In 2005, Andy re-joined Asda as Retail and Operations Director, becoming Chief Operating Officer two years later and CEO in May 2010.
